Principles of pain management: Pragmatic approaches to incorporate pain management in clinical practice

In this first invited talk in our Health psychology series, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Joshua Rash, R.Psych., Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and recent inductee in the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Rash is the recipient of multiple prestigious awards for his scholarly work in the area of behavioral medicine.
In this workshop, Dr. Rash will discuss:
- Review of core competencies for pain management.
- Overview of pain, including gate-control theory, neuromatrix, and social communication model
- Understanding a prototypical person’s experience living with pain
- Overview of the Psychology Pain Assessment
- Self-Management approaches to chronic pain, including acceptance, psycho-education, myths and messaging, goal setting, self-monitoring, working with grief and loss, relaxation, activity pacing, and assertive communication
